Nursing Home Deaths Significantly Decreased
There has been a significant decrease in nursing home deaths, possibly linked to vaccinations. The latest data showed that the number of deaths for the week ending February 14th totaled 1,464, a significant decrease from the weekly totals that topped 5,000 in January. Vaccinations began in long-term care facilities in December and have increased from there. Now, more than 4.5 million people at nursing homes have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
FDA Finds The Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Safe
The FDA has found that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is both safe and effective. It is a single shot vaccine that will most likely become the 3rd Covid vaccine to be authorized in the US. This vaccine is more cost-effective than the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and it can also be stored in a refrigerator. Based on trials, it has been shown to be more than 85% effective at preventing serious illness and 66% effective overall.
States Ease Covid-19 Rules Despite Warnings
On Tuesday, Texas became the biggest state to lift its mask mandate. Texas is also doing away with a limit on the number of people allowed to dine indoors at a restaurant. Other states, such as Michigan, Mississippi and Louisiana, are easing up on restrictions for bars, restaurants, and other businesses as well.
Covid-19 Cases Begin to Flatten
The number of Covid-19 cases have begun to flatten after a six week decline period. Last Wednesday, the 7-day average of daily new cases was just over 72,000 which is relatively similar to the prior weeks cases. In addition, Covid-19 deaths and hospitalizations have continued to sharply decline.
