Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Great southern food,  small-town vibes, waterfront views–if any of these concepts appeal to you, then Virginia is your next state to work in! Additionally, if you happen to be searching for great locum tenens opportunities for CRNAs and anesthesiologists, Independence Anesthesia has several!

Coastal Cuisine

Virginia has a great coastal scene! Specifically, in the Glouchester area, many of the local restaurants serve freshly caught seafood such as crab, shrimp, oysters, mussels, clams, flounder, fluke, trout, and rockfish–is your mouth watering yet? There are more exotic dishes like stingray, shark, and more! Wash it all down with a pint at a local brewery such as Gloucester Brewing Company. A waterfront community along the Chesapeake Bay, Glouchester has many activities to balance out the seafood. These include fishing, boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Depending on where you spend your leisure, in the Chesapeake Bay, you’ll get a great glimpse into the world of dolphins and skates, who thrive in the waters during the summer. Outside of the downtown area, the skies are so clear that you can see satellites at night. If you are on the water during holidays, residents always set off fireworks!

The Glouchester area is about twenty minutes from other major cities–Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. This is a culturally rich area of the country perfect for history fanatics. Experience Colonial Williamsburg. There are fifes and drumming events that offer a true glimpse into the era of revolution, along with historical tours, museums, and so much more. In the same vein, Historic Jamestowne is considered one of America’s most endangered places. It is England’s very first permanent settlement in America, established in 1607. Therefore it is a very fragile archeological site that is a must-visit spot in the state! Other coastal cities, Newport News, Hampton Roads, and Virginia Beach, are less than half an hour away. An interesting site to visit is First Landing State Park; this marks where colonists first landed in 1607. Nearby is the Chrysler Museum of Art. The museum boasts over 30,000 works that span over 5,000 years. Back Bay Wildlife Refuge spans over 9,000 acres along the coastline. It is the perfect spot to bird-watch as many waterfowl winter here.

City Vibes

Two hours inland lands you in Richmond. This capital city is lively with a great arts scene, restaurants, and theme parks. Visit Kings Dominion if you are looking for thrills and an opportunity to get outside. Explore the regional BBQ at any of the 27 locations around the city. For something more unique, take one of the riverfront canal rides! If you have an interest in the country’s history, there are many different significant Civil War sites. For fantastic outdoor tours, check out Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, where there are 50 acres of carefully curated flowers, trees, and foliage. Visit the Maymont, a 100-acre Victorian-era estate, where there are gardens, an arboretum, animals, and a stunning mansion.
